Axiom 4 of quantum mechanics says that on measurement of a quantum system's observable , the measured value will be an eigenvalue of the associated of the operator. After measurement, the system ends up in a state corresponding to a unit vector of the eigenspace for the measured value. This passage is called the collapse of the wave function.
