In quantum mechanics, each type of particle has a spin , which is a non-negative integer or half-integer. The Hilbert space for such a particle is , where is the spinor part of the wavefunction, with dimension .1

Electrons for example have a spin , so their spinor part is 2 dimensional (see Spin-½). Particles can be grouped by their spins.

The discovery of the spin was preceded by several experimental confirmations.
